Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson and West Ham United’s Michail Antonio have spoke about their ideal team roommate for an away day.

Wilson posed the question to Antonio on ‘The Footballer’s Football Podcast‘. The Jamaican international gave the answer of Darren Randolph. The Hammers forward then flipped the question back to him. At first, the Magpies striker wasn’t prepared as he hadn’t thought of an answer himself.

In the end, Wilson couldn’t decide on just one player, so he named three. He said: “It would probably be either Matt Ritchie or Kieran Trippier I’d say. Or Jamaal Lascelles.

“It’s difficult because I’ve not been at the club so long and with COVID and stuff like that. We’ve not really been in different environments so much to build up a relationship.”

It’s interesting that he names Trippier considering the pair haven’t even played together yet at Newcastle.

The pandemic and the lack of bonding took its toll on relationships in the Newcastle squad

Wilson joined the club in September 2020 during the height of the pandemic. So whilst the squad could train together, it was hard for the players to really bond outside of the game.

Even when the restrictions began to be lifted over time, it appeared there wasn’t much team bonding. During international breaks, it seemed the manager and players would do their own thing.

However, since the arrival of the new owners and Eddie Howe, that’s begun to change. The Newcastle squad has already had two trips abroad together during the international breaks. They went to Saudi Arabia and then Dubai.

It’s no surprise that the Magpies have started to perform better on the pitch. Wilson himself has said how he’s gotten to know the likes of Joelinton better through these trips.

Wilson is aiming for a return at the end of the month. He’s edging closer to his highly anticipated Newcastle comeback, boosting our options up-front.

The Magpies have been able to cope without him in 2022 so far. Chris Wood will be full of confidence after he netted his first home goal against Wolves on Friday.

Despite almost being safe, the Toon will have their sights on the top 10. The gap between 9th and 15th is only six points, so it’s all to play for.
