Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson has offered his advice to West Ham United forward Michail Antonio. The pair host a podcast called ‘The Footballer’s Football Podcast‘ for BBC Sounds.

Antonio has been on quite the goal drought for the Hammers. He hasn’t scored in the Premier League since New Year’s Day. However, the Jamaican international has gotten a couple of assists in 2022.

Although he’s currently injured, Wilson offered his words of wisdom on their most recent episode.

“We go through spells of not scoring and things like that,” Wilson said.

“The only thing I would say is I’ve been three, four, five games without scoring and it gets to a point where you’re like right, I’m thinking too much about scoring. Forget scoring goals, what else can I do that brings a good performance? What does a good performance look like?”

The comments come ahead of West Ham’s biggest game of the season. They face Lyon tonight for a place in the Europa League semi-finals. The tie is perfectly poised at 1-1 after the first leg in London.

The Hammers have been on an incredible European run, even knocking out Sevilla in the previous round. If Antonio does net a winner tonight, perhaps he’ll owe it all to Wilson and his words of encouragement…

Wilson will hope he can hit the ground running when he returns for Newcastle

The Newcastle forward sustained an injury in December against Manchester United in a 1-1 draw. He’s hopefully back for the Magpies at the end of the month.

Whilst Chris Wood has offered effective hold-up play, he’s found it harder to find the net. Wilson is such a good finisher and is a key contributor to Eddie Howe’s side.

Ten points separate the Toon from the relegation zone. Unless anything out of the ordinary happens, safety is very likely. Wilson will hope he can steer Newcastle even further away from the drop upon his return.

When the severity of the injury was first announced, some fans were very worried. But in that time the Magpies have coped without him. They even went on a nine-game unbeaten run.

There’s still the opportunity for Newcastle to make a late surge for the top 10. Only six points separate ninth place and 15th (where the Toon are in the league). With a lot of those teams in mid-table positions losing or dropping points, it’s all to play for.

Wilson’s hunger when he gets back could spur Newcastle on to make a late surge up the league table. It would be a truly remarkable turnaround by Howe and his players if they pulled that off.
