Bruno Guimaraes was very impressed with Lewis Miley during Newcastle United’s FA Cup win over Bromley.
The third round tie at St James’ Park was the perfect opportunity for Lewis Miley to get his first start of the season, and he certainly seized that opportunity – even if he was at fault for Bromley taking the lead.
The Newcastle United midfielder recovered, and produced a man of the match display that booked the Magpies’ place in round four of the FA Cup. Eddie Howe’s side will face Birmingham City away from home.
Miley was extremely impressive, with his performance capped off by a beautiful strike. It drew Newcastle United level, and was his second ever senior goal for the club.
Away from his goal, the 18-year-old played very well, and Newcastle fans were delighted with Miley’s performance. He never shied from possession and kept the Magpies ticking over, while he did his best to protect the defence in the absence of Sandro Tonali.

Lewis Miley receives praise from Bruno Guimaraes
On what was his first senior start since February, Miley did really well.
And Bruno Guimaraes was keen to remind him of that after the game.
Following Newcastle’s 3-1 win over Bromley, Miley posted a picture to Instagram of him celebrating his goal.
He received a reply from Bruno, who commented: “What a player man.”
There was also a response from Will Osula, who wrote: “Love it you.”
Elsewhere, there were comments from Anthony Gordon, Tino Livramento, Matt Targett, Elliot Anderson and Bobby Clark.
Miley took his Newcastle United opportunity when others didn’t
Not many fringe players seized their opportunity in the FA Cup, but Miley certainly did.
While a lot of players looked rusty and even unmotivated, Miley was sharp. He showed a willingness to run the game, despite being the youngest player in a black and white shirt – until Trevan Sanusi came on.
This performance against Bromley will have served Miley well, and should result in Eddie Howe giving him more minutes in the second half of the season.
Howe does not want to loan Miley out, which is understandable. He will probably benefit more from training with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali everyday.
Starts might be hard to come by for Miley, who will be grateful that Newcastle are still in the FA Cup. With the Magpies set to face Birmingham City at St Andrew’s, the Toon wonderkid could have another chance to start next month.
