Newcastle United takes on Nottingham Forest on Sunday in a game that will be crucial for the Champions League race.

The Magpies are looking to snap a two-game losing streak in the Premier League with a win against a Nottingham Forest side who have looked unstoppable at times this season.

Newcastle United could move up to fourth with a win and if other results go their way. They’ve already been handed a boost after both Fulham and Bournemouth lost on Saturday – Eddie Howe must now finish the job and put them closer to a Champions League spot.

Former Newcastle man Elliot Anderson will return to St James’ Park for the first time since leaving Tyneside last summer. Anderson admitted he did not want to leave Newcastle but understood it was something the club had to do to avoid a points deduction.

Chris Wood is also set to return to his former stomping ground on Sunday. The Kiwi scored a hat-trick in his last visit to Newcastle, something Toon fans will be keen to avoid this time around.

With Newcastle preparing for one of the most important games of the season, captain Bruno Guimaraes has sent a passionate message to supporters.

Bruno Guimaraes’ message to Newcastle fans

Guimaraes has been a big character for the Magpies this season. He took the captain’s armband from Kieran Trippier at the start of the campaign and has relished the role ever since.

Anthony Gordon’s interview was gatecrashed by Guimaraes after Newcastle beat Arsenal to reach the Carabao Cup final earlier in February. He kissed the England international on the cheek and told him that he ‘loves’ him.

The Brazilian has now taken to social media to rally the troops ahead of the Nottingham Forest clash.

Guimaraes said: “Howay the lads!! Your support gonna be very important to us as always.”

Recent reports have suggested that Guimaraes could leave Newcastle in the summer if the Magpies fail to qualify for the Champions League this season. But the 27-year-old has previously reiterated his love for the club, the city, and the fans – hinting that he may stay on Tyneside for many years to come.

Toon sporting director Paul Mitchell is a big fan of Guimaraes. Following interest from Manchester City and Barcelona, it was reported that Newcastle will offer Guimaraes a new deal which would keep him at the club past his 2028 and hand him a small salary increase.

Bruno Guimaraes will be important for Newcastle against Nottingham Forest

Games against Nottingham Forest are no longer as straightforward as before.

The Magpies have won both of their meetings this season, but it took a penalty shootout to beat them in the Carabao Cup and a hearty comeback to earn three points against them at the City Ground.

Guimaraes thrives in big games – and he needs to do the same against Forest on Sunday. Nuno Espirito Santo likes to play more defensive football, opting to attack on the counter.

The Brazilian has a big job of ensuring Forest are unable to play to their strengths in a ground that has been considered a fortress at times.

He will have Sandro Tonali in the starting XI to help him – the Italian will play in a deeper midfield role that gives Guimaraes the ability to push higher up the pitch and easily prevent counter-attacks.
