Bruno Guimaraes took the reigns as Newcastle United captain this season, succeeding Kieran Trippier.
The Brazilian has been a role model in regards to how you should act when given the captain’s armband at the club – an opportunity he did not see coming.
When Eddie Howe named Guimaraes Newcastle captain ahead of the 2024/25 season, it came as a surprise to the 27-year-old who had just requested to be more involved behind the scenes.
His influence has been felt both on and off the pitch. Dan Burn cheered for Guimaraes after he finally won his first coin toss of the season against Liverpool in December. He was also seen consoling fellow countryman Joelinton after his error led to Liverpool’s second goal in the thrilling 3-3 draw.
Guimaraes has been very vocal about Newcastle’s performances on social media this season. Miley was congratulated by Guimaraes in January after scoring a fantastic goal against Bromley in the FA Cup.
Newcastle’s win against Arsenal which saw them reach the Carabao Cup final was dedicated to Rob Lee by the Toon captain. The Newcastle legend missed the game after having a knee replacement.
With Guimaraes seemingly enjoying life on Tyneside, it could all come crashing down depending on one big factor that he can play a part in.

Bruno Guimaraes agrees Newcastle ‘verbal pact’
While Guimaraes is Newcastle’s captain, that does not stop transfer rumours from circulating. When he signed a new deal in 2023, it was revealed that Guimaraes had a £100m release clause.
Manchester City wanted Guimaraes, and many thought they would activate his clause. However, the 27-year-old stayed at the club and his release clause expired.
Now, according to TeamTalk, Newcastle has a ‘verbal pact’ with Guimaraes that he can leave for around £85m in the summer if the Magpies fail to qualify for the Champions League and a team playing in the competition make an offer.
The report also states that Man City retain an interest in Guimaraes even after adding Nico Gonzalez in the January transfer window.
Guimaraes has enjoyed playing with more freedom this season thanks to Sandro Tonali’s return to Newcastle’s first-team squad following a 10-month ban. Tonali plays in a deeper midfield role which allows Guimaraes to play in a more advanced midfield position which has helped his attacking returns.
It’s hard to see Bruno Guimaraes leaving Newcastle
While there is still transfer interest, it’s very difficult to see Guimaraes playing for any other club than Newcastle. He has fully bought into the project on Tyneside and is genuinely loving life there.
Guimaraes said he is a ‘Geordie‘ in a recent interview and wants his young sons to know what he has done with the club throughout his time there. When he retires, he will continue to support the club because of the love that Newcastle fans have given him since joining in 2022.
Despite his words, the Brazilian’s frustrations could be seen during Newcastle’s loss to Man City. Guimaraes threw his chewing gum down in frustration when he was taken off. More so at his performance than anyone else’s.
The club captain has the chance to redeem himself on Sunday when Newcastle host Nottingham Forest at St James’ Park – a game that would move them closer to a Champions League spot.
