Bruno Guimaraes’ hopes of lifting a trophy with Newcastle United this season now rest with the FA Cup.
Less than a week ago, Newcastle were knocked out of the Champions League after losing 2-1 to AC Milan. Now our Carabao Cup adventure is over as well, with the Magpies losing to Chelsea on penalties.
Eddie Howe’s side were minutes away from another League Cup semi final, only for Mykhailo Mudryk to capitalise on Kieran Trippier’s error and take the game to penalties.
Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes both scored their penalties, but misses from Trippier and Matt Ritchie allowed Chelsea to triumph at Stamford Bridge.
After defending so valiantly, Newcastle deserved more. There were some ginormous performances in black and white, one of which came from Bruno Guimaraes.
The 26-year-old was exceptional, putting his body on the line as he aimed to bring a trophy to Tyneside. He even produced an incredible goal-line clearance that he celebrated as if he had scored himself.
But Bruno’s efforts were in vein, as Newcastle were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Chelsea.

Bruno Guimaraes sends message to fans after Newcastle’s Carabao Cup exit
Following the Carabao Cup exit, Bruno took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to provide his reaction and deliver a message to fans.
He wrote: “Thanks for your support. We deserved better. We stick together as always.”
FA Cup is now even more important for Newcastle and Bruno
Bruno is right, we did deserve better. Sadly, we did not get what we deserved.
It was an agonising way to be knocked out of the competition, and it was a competition that Newcastle were determined to win following last season’s final defeat to Manchester United.
But the Magpies have been knocked out at the quarter final stage, meaning the FA Cup is the only competition we can realistically win. Mathematically, the Premier League title is still possible, but that is not going to happen.
The FA Cup now becomes even more important, if that was at all possible with a Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland looming in the third round.
