Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup dream ended in penalty heartache on Tuesday night, but they certainly rode their luck at times at Stamford Bridge.
After taking the lead through Callum Wilson, Newcastle held on until stoppage time. However, a mistake from Kieran Trippier allowed Mykhailo Mudryk to grab an equaliser. From there, the game went to penalties and it was Chelsea who came out on top.
After going in front, Newcastle spent a lot of the night defending. Eddie Howe’s side were heroic at times, with Jamaal Lascelles producing another wondrous performance at the heart of the defence.
Bruno Guimaraes was also spectacular, and he produced an incredible block to deny Raheem Sterling in the first half.
The Chelsea winger looked like he was about to make it 1-1, but his goal-bound effort was blocked on the line by Bruno. It was incredible by the 26-year-old, who celebrated as if he had scored himself.
The Brazilian turned to the Newcastle fans behind him and roared, in a moment that Sky Sports pundits Jamie Redknapp and Shay Given absolutely loved.
Shay Given thought Bruno Guimaraes’ block vs Chelsea was ‘phenomenal’
During Sky Sports’ coverage of Chelsea vs Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup, Redknapp and Given provided their reaction to Bruno’s goal-saving block during the first half.
Jamie Redknapp: “This is brilliant. I love this and the Geordies will certainly love this!”
Shay Given: “Especially the fans behind the goal. It’s as good as scoring a goal. Look at Bruno’s reaction. That’s why the fans love him but not just because he’s going to the fans. It’s a phenomenal clearance off the line as well.”

Newcastle midfielder was spectacular during Carabao Cup exit
It was absolutely brilliant from Bruno, who was fantastic at Stamford Bridge. He was probably the best player on the pitch.
The amount of running he got through was incredible, while he was also clever with the ball when he got hold of it. He continued his rich vein of form, while he also scored his spot kick during the penalty shootout.
Sadly, Bruno’s performance and penalty did not lead to a second consecutive Carabao Cup semi final.
For all of Newcastle’s hard work, they were knocked out of the competition. Bruno’s pure joy in the first half turned into despair, as the Magpies crashed out of the Carabao Cup less than a week after their Champions League exit.
