Bruno Guimaraes has shared his shock at how good a Newcastle United player is while addressing the club’s lack of transfers this summer.
The last couple of months have been very tough for the Magpies, despite winning a major trophy and qualifying for the Champions League in the 2024/25 campaign.
When Newcastle United were celebrating on the pitch after securing Champions League football in May, many would have believed that this was the start of something special. A transformative summer, with multiple positions being improved throughout the starting XI.
Unfortunately, it has not been like that, and Newcastle are struggling to make signings. Just one major name has joined the club so far in Anthony Elanga, who moved from Nottingham Forest for a fee of around £55million.
With a difficult summer continuing, Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes has shared which player has taken him by complete surprise in training, while also giving his view on the Magpies’ slow summer.

Bruno Guimaraes is seriously impressed with Anthony Elanga at Newcastle United
Elanga has solved a major problem at Newcastle this summer. Eddie Howe has been desperate to sign a right-winger after so long having to deal with the likes of Miguel Almiron, whose form dipped significantly after a bright 2022/23 campaign.
Thankfully, Elanga joining gives Howe that quality winger he has been so eager to sign. Elanga is excited to get started at Newcastle and will likely be involved in the game against Arsenal in Singapore this Sunday.
The 23-year-old’s influence has not gone unnoticed either. Speaking to Mail Sport, Guimaraes said: “We have to be calm. We have to be patient. We know the directors are working the markets. We have Elanga, who has surprised me a lot in training, unbelievable.”
Guimaraes also commented on Alexander Isak’s desire to leave Newcastle this summer, confirming he hopes to see the Swede in the black and white stripes next season.
The Magpies are in the Champions League, and they want Isak to be part of it.

Bruno Guimaraes comments on Newcastle United’s transfer window
Dan Burn hopes Isak stays at Newcastle, and Guimaraes feels exactly the same. The news is sure to have come as a complete shock to the players just as much as the fans.
In May, Guimaraes called for new signings at Newcastle, but that has not been the case so far this summer. However, with Yoane Wissa keen on joining Newcastle, fans could see another quality arrival in the next week or so.
Howe will be fully aware of what needs to be done ahead of next season. The squad is not strong enough to compete in the Champions League, so improvements are needed.
Speaking in the same interview with MailSport about transfers, Guimaraes said: “We are still in the market and looking for new options. But we’ve had success before and we can have success again. I’m more focused on the players we have here. My job for the club is to try to keep the lads motivated.”
