Bruno Guimaraes took the role of club captain at Newcastle United at the beginning of the 2024/25 campaign.

Fans may not have seen the Brazilian to be a likely candidate to take over from Kieran Trippier, who had previously succeeded Jamaal Lascelles in 2022. However, it is a role that he has taken in his stride.

Eddie Howe named Bruno Guimaraes Newcastle United captain following a request from the midfielder to be more involved in proceedings with the team. The 27-year-old has done an excellent job in his new role this season, guiding the Magpies to their first domestic honour since 1955.

Guimaraes has performed his duties as captain both on and off the pitch, regularly speaking to players away from games on social media. Most recently, Guimaraes praised Trippier for his performance in Newcastle’s 5-0 win against Crystal Palace in April.

Howe put a lot of faith in Guimaraes after the decision to name him captain, but it is a decision the Newcastle manager has not lived to regret.

While Guimaraes continues to enjoy his run as captain, he has made a comment regarding Howe’s future which is sure to startle many Newcastle fans.

Bruno Guimaraes backs Eddie Howe for England job

Last summer, there was a lot of speculation over Howe’s future at Newcastle, with the 47-year-old heavily linked with the England job following Gareth Southgate’s resignation.

In the end, it was revealed that Howe was never in the running for the England job due to a hefty buyout clause. Sean Dyche was baffled that England did not appoint Howe, with the FA opting to appoint Thomas Tuchel instead.

While Howe was not approached for the England job, Guimaraes has backed him to become the Three Lions head coach one day.

In an interview with FourFourTwo, where he had been named the Premier League’s 12th best player of the season, he said: “It’s tough to describe what a fabulous human being (Howe) is: you’d have to work with him on a daily basis to get the full picture of what I’m talking about.”

“I have no doubt that we beat Liverpool because of him. He was like, ‘We’re not dropping our lines; we’ll keep pressing high, man to man.’ Liverpool weren’t expecting that at all.”

“He is by far the best European coach I’ve had. No doubt he’ll be England manager one day.

“As a person, he’s a sensation – a true legend.

“He’s gifted with strong man-management skills. He knows exactly the best way to talk to you in private, in the dressing room and in the press. He still has a long and promising career ahead of him.”

Guimaraes has won more caps than any other Brazilian player since the 2022 World Cup, a lot of that can go down to Howe’s fantastic work behind the scenes.

Bruno Guimaraes to be managed by new coach on the international stage

It is going to be business as usual for Guimaraes at Newcastle as he looks to captain the club back to the Champions League after missing out on European football this season.

The Brazilian would be rounding off a truly memorable season with the Magpies if he helps them secure a top-five finish, one that will live long in the memory of many fans.

While it looks like nothing is changing at Newcastle, there is set to be a big change on the international stage for him and teammate Joelinton.

It was recently reported that Carlo Ancelotti has agreed to become Brazil’s new manager after a disastrous season with Real Madrid, which will see them finish the campaign with just one trophy win to their name.

Fans will be delighted to see that the pair will be managed by another top-class manager away from Newcastle.
