Bayern Munich now want ‘phenomenal’ Newcastle transfer target

A new midfielder could well be on the cards for Newcastle United in the January transfer window.

While Sandro Tonali arrived over the course of the summer, the Italian and Bruno Guimaraes remain the only two players in that position Newcastle have signed since PIF’s takeover.

That has largely been because of the need to strengthen elsewhere, as well as Joelinton’s rebirth as a central midfielder.

Still, reports have suggested the club remain open to the idea of strengthening there as Eddie Howe attempts to build a squad capable of challenging across a number of fronts.

Indeed, one name keeps emerging on the radar.

England and Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is consistently linked with the Magpies but signing him will not be easy.

According to The Sun, Bayern Munich could enter the race to sign the player.

A move to City last summer has not worked out and the German champions have shown a willingness to conduct their business in the Premier League, having signed Harry Kane from Tottenham.

The report adds that Bayern are closely watching his situation at the Etihad Stadium and plan to make a move either in January or the summer.

Phillips is in demand for a reason

Though it’s not worked out for the 27-year-old at City, there is little shame in that. Pep Guardiola boasts arguably the best squad in world football, after all.

Phillips could have perhaps done more to impress on occasion but there’s a reason lots of clubs are being linked with a move. Newcastle’s own Kieran Trippier has hailed the former Leeds man as “phenomenal” and defensive midfielders were at a premium in the summer, with both Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo going for huge sums.

If Newcastle want him, they’re going to have to put up a fight.
