Anthony Gordon says one Newcastle United transfer was a massive ‘risk’ by PIF

Anthony Gordon is one of many outstanding signings that Newcastle United have made since PIF bought the club.

Newcastle United’s owners have invested a lot of money in new players, with Eddie Howe able to call upon genuine top level talent.

Anthony Gordon falls into that bracket, two years after his £45million arrival from Everton. Gordon’s move to Newcastle was questioned, but it has proven to be money well spent.

He is achieving his potential on Tyneside, with Gordon blossoming into a superstar.

Anthony Gordon makes Alexander Isak admission

The same can be said for Alexander Isak, who is Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever.

He joined the club half a season earlier than Gordon, arriving from Real Sociedad for a club record fee of £63million.

It was an incredible amount of money for the Magpies to spend on one player, and Gordon has said in an interview with the That’s Football YouTube channel that Newcastle United took a huge risk when they brought Isak to St James’ Park.

“Everyone can see how good he is, he’s got every attribute,” he said.

“When he came, it was sort of a big risk. He was a lot of money, like £60million. The club took that investment in him and it’s really paying off now.

“Every year since I’ve been with him, he’s got better. This year it feels like he has took a massive step into the player that everyone knew he could be. How many players really take that step? He’s done it.”

Newcastle United took the risk that Arsenal avoided

As Gordon says, spending so much money on Isak was a risk for Newcastle United. Any deal worth that amount is a risk.

Last year, Eddie Howe said signing Isak was a risk too, given the fact that he had never played in the Premier League before.

But Isak has settled into English football with ease, with the 25-year-old boasting 54 goals in 96 appearances for Newcastle United so far. His numbers are incredible, which is why Alan Shearer thinks Isak is world class.

Every club in the world wishes they had Isak, but luckily he belongs to the Magpies. That is because they took a risk in August 2022, heavily investing in a player who is now worth at least double what he initially cost.

While Newcastle United seized the opportunity, Arsenal will be ruing the fact that they did not take the risk a few months earlier.

Arsenal want to sign Isak right now, but are not going to be able to. Isak will cost too much money, with the Swede seemingly destined to remain on Tyneside for now.

But Arsenal had their chance to sign Isak, just months before he became a Magpie. They were interested in Isak in January 2022, but, according to the Athletic, opted against activating his £75million release clause because they felt it was above his market value.

Now he is worth even more than that, while Newcastle United were able to strike a slightly cheaper deal six months later.
