Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has said ‘blame me’ after the Magpies’ FA Cup exit.

Eddie Howe’s side were knocked out of the FA Cup on Sunday, with Newcastle United losing to Brighton.

Danny Welbeck scored in extra time to break Toon hearts, on a day where everything appeared to go wrong for the Magpies. An injury to Lewis Hall was confirmed, while Anthony Gordon is suspended for the Carabao Cup final.

That will now be the only cup final that Newcastle United are involved in, as their FA Cup dream is over for another season.

Bruno Guimaraes tells Newcastle United fans to ‘blame’ him after FA Cup exit

It was a disastrous afternoon for Eddie Howe’s side, and now Bruno Guimaraes has delivered a message to supporters.

The Newcastle United camp has been very quiet following the defeat, but the captain has now posted a call to arms on the back of Sunday’s loss.

Bruno wrote on Instagram: “Disappointed not to progress in the FA Cup, as it was clearly one of our goals.

“Moments like this are when we need to stick together the most. I know that when eliminations like this happen, it’s hard to accept, and we always look for someone to blame. If you need to find one, you can blame me.

“We have two weeks before one of the most important games for the club in recent years, and we must be ready for this great opportunity. My only request is that, in this moment, we stay united as one and go after the best for the club because we still have great things ahead.”

Newcastle United fans react to Bruno Guimaraes’ message

While words will not get Newcastle back in the FA Cup or stop Gordon from being suspended for the Carabao Cup final, Bruno has delivered an important message.

It is vital that everyone sticks together ahead of the final on March 16th, and plenty of supporters have reacted very positively to Bruno’s social media message on X.

One fan wrote: “Wasn’t on him why we lost but standing up to take responsibility shows his leadership. Hopefully next week we see a massive reaction from them all on Monday and it pushes us into the final with a bit of confidence after a big win.”

A second supporter added: “well said skipper, we have to stick together no matter how painful that defeat yesterday was and fair play for protecting your teammates.”

“True leadership,” wrote a third Newcastle United fan.

Another Toon fan replied: “He’s right to be fair. As disappointed and angry as I was yesterday, that’s now in the past and we need to focus forward now.”

“Now this…this is a genuine captain’s statement,” posted this supporter.

Finally, this Newcastle fan wants the entire Toon Army to take Bruno’s words on board, writing: “Listen to the captain.”

Bruno’s message also received a response from former Newcastle United co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi, who posted a set of black and white hearts.

Bruno must lead by example for Newcastle

As captain, it is great that Bruno has came out and addressed the heartache of Sunday’s defeat against Brighton.

Despite his wishes, I do not think any Newcastle United supporter will be blaming Bruno for the loss against Fabian Hurzeler’s side.

In fact, Bruno thought he had created the winner. His excellent free-kick was converted by Fabian Schar, only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside.

Newcastle United now have one more game before the final, with the Magpies facing West Ham at the London Stadium on Monday night.

That game is suddenly even more crucial, as Newcastle really could do with building up some momentum and regaining confidence ahead of facing Liverpool at Wembley.

With that in mind, we need Bruno to lead by example on the pitch. He has done it off the pitch with his words, but the Brazilian’s leadership will be defined by his actions.
