Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer witnessed something special on Saturday night.

Like every Toon fan, Alan Shearer was celebrating Newcastle United’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

It was a huge three points for the Magpies, who are now up to seventh in the Premier League. And it was largely possible because of Bruno Guimaraes.

The 26-year-old was Newcastle United’s hero, scoring two wonderful goals to give his side victory. He was outstanding against Nottingham Forest, playing in a more advanced role where he could influence the game in more dangerous areas.

Eddie Howe’s tactical decision paid off, and Alan Shearer was amazed with what he saw from Bruno on Saturday night.

Alan Shearer blown away by Bruno Guimaraes goal

Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker have been speaking about Bruno’s performance against Forest on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast.

Shearer: “I thought Bruno Guimaraes was sensational.”

Lineker: “I love watching him play.”

Shearer: “A more advanced role for him as well. He played a little bit more forward. But what about his finish from the ball in from Trippier from the set piece? The volley was just – it’s one of the most difficult things to do to hit it with your first foot, with your right foot as he did was an incredible finish. A really tough finish but brilliant.”

Out of this world strike by Newcastle midfielder

Both of Bruno’s goals were special, but that first one was outrageous. First of all, it was a cleverly worked free-kick courtesy of Jason Tindall’s work on the training ground. Bruno said afterwards that the goal was down to the Mad Dog, as he ghosted in at the back post to give Newcastle the lead.

The routine was clever, but the finish was pure class. Bruno caught Kieran Trippier’s cross clean on the volley, almost using the outside of his right foot to fire it home beyond former Toon goalkeeper Matz Sels.

As Shearer says, it was an incredibly difficult finish but one that Bruno made look easy.

It summed up his class, and it is hopefully something we see more of between now and the end of the season. Bruno has not been much of a goal threat so far, with Saturday seeing him score his second and third goals of the season.

The Brazilian will be hungry for more, and he should get more chances if Howe continues to use him higher up the pitch.
