Bruno Guimaraes has shared who was really to thank for Newcastle United’s opening goal against Nottingham Forest this weekend.

Newcastle took the lead from a brilliantly worked set-piece which was taken short to Kieran Trippier who hit a perfectly weighted cross to Bruno to volley past Matz Sels in Forest’s goal.

Speaking to NUFCTV, Bruno wanted to thank Eddie Howe’s assistant Jason Tindall after working with him during the week in training to try and score more goals like that.

Bruno thanks key Newcastle man for his first goal

It wasn’t exactly an easy goal to create or finish, so naturally a lot of the credit goes to both Trippier and Bruno who were able to execute this set-piece play to take the lead in yesterday’s game.

However, the Brazilian wanted to personally thank Tindall, or who they refer to as Mad Dog, for helping him in training looking at previous goals and trying to get him in positions where he can score more goals.

The former Lyon man had tripled his tally for the Premier League this season after bagging a brace against Forest and was grateful to Howe for playing him in a more advanced role where he has more freedom.

If Bruno can keep up this type of form for Newcastle then they may have unlocked something that could prove to be key in this final run of fixtures as they continue to chase Champions League football.

On the goal, Bruno said: “The first one, it’s not easy to hit the ball. I would say the goal was for ‘Mad Dog’. We worked a lot this week on set-pieces. I scored like that last season against Brentford and he showed the vide to me, I had the opportunity to score like that again and I score, thank you JT.”

Newcastle’s set-pieces could be key to this season

Despite suffering what was somewhat of a disappointing first half of the season, Newcastle still have a chance at a successful campaign as they sit seventh in the table and in an FA Cup fifth round tie against Blackburn.

A big difference from last season to now is that they don’t appear to be blowing teams away as often and the defence has looked a shadow of its former self, especially without the injured Nick Pope.

Given the fact they have Trippier on set-pieces and a fairly tall team all round, these set plays could key for Newcastle both offensively and defensively.

If they can continue to work on these in training and come up with some more spectacular routines then Newcastle can certainly be in with a chance of reaching Europe’s elite next season.
