Alan Shearer’s instant reaction as Newcastle United beat Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer was blown away with the Magpies during the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg win over Arsenal.

Eddie Howe’s side are now favourites to reach the Carabao Cup final, after Newcastle United beat Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

It was the perfect away performance from Newcastle United, who made it seven wins in a row thanks to goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon. That duo did it again, just like they did on Saturday against Tottenham Hotspur.

But this win was much more impressive, as Newcastle’s record without Bruno Guimaraes is terrible. He was absent in North London, with the 27-year-old serving a suspension.

This is the first time that the Magpies have won a game without Bruno since he became a Toon player, and what a time for it.

Alan Shearer hails ‘outstanding’ Newcastle performance against Arsenal

Newcastle United were first class in every department. They were dangerous going forwards, with Alexander Isak showing exactly why the Arsenal fans are so desperate to call him their own.

Defensively, the Magpies were hideously beautiful. They were so resolute, showing incredible determination to keep a clean sheet. Dan Burn and Sven Botman were absolutely dominant, and helped ensure Newcastle have a two goal advantage ahead of the second leg.

It was a brilliant performance, and one that Alan Shearer absolutely loved.

After the full-time whistle, he wrote on X: “An OUTSTANDING first leg semi final performance from every single player from start to finish.”

When is the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg?

Newcastle United are halfway there.

But it is technically only half-time, as there is another 90 minutes to play at St James’ Park next month.

The second leg is on February 5th, four days after the Magpies face Fulham at home in the Premier League.

Howe’s side have got five more games until the second leg, including this Sunday’s FA Cup third round tie against Bromley.

If Newcastle United do make it to the Carabao Cup final, they will play either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on March 16th.
