Newcastle United were back at something approaching their best on Tuesday night.
For only the second time in the Premier League this season, Newcastle won away from home and ended Aston Villa’s unbeaten run in their own backyard for over a year.
Eddie Howe’s side added to their list of big results this season by romping to a 3-1 victory at Villa Park, which is certainly no mean feat.
Indeed, to have done so without a recognised striker on the pitch for most of the game was all the more impressive too following Alexander Isak’s injury.
One man certainly stepped up.
Miguel Almiron: Newcastle star was only 50% fit against Aston Villa
Miguel Almiron, who was seemingly close to leaving the club before the Villa game, drew special mention from pundit Ally McCoist after the win.
He missed the win over Fulham in the FA Cup as transfer speculation swirled but impressed upon his introduction after Isak’s injury.
Howe was particularly pleased.
“He was 50 per cent fit because of his illness,” said the Newcastle boss (via Martin Hardy of The Times).
“What a person he is.”
Miguel Almiron: Major Newcastle boost
There may have been some merit in selling a player who has frustrated at times this season during a period in which Newcastle are struggling on the FFP front.
That, however, did not happen and we have to operate in the real world.
With Jacob Murphy now back and impressing, Almiron has some much-needed cover and competition on the right-hand side of the attack at last.
All being well, the two will be able to rotate as Howe plots a late push for a European spot in the Premier League as well as a deep run in the FA Cup.
Now staying at the club, Almiron can play a big role in the battles to come this season.
