Newcastle United tried to complete another comeback against Fulham, but fell short.
The Magpies came from behind to beat Wolves last weekend, with Harvey Barnes’ screamer giving Newcastle United a 2-1 win at Molineux.
Eddie Howe‘s side showed great spirit to come from behind, and needed even more spirit to do the same against Fulham. Their task was even tougher, as they went 2-0 down in the first half.
Newcastle United got a response in the second half, with Harvey Barnes scoring to make it 2-1. From that moment, it looked like another comeback could be on, with the Magpies having most of the second half to kick on and make up for such an abject first 45 minutes.
Fabian Schar had the chance to equalise for Newcastle against Fulham
While Newcastle slumped to a 3-1 defeat by conceding again in stoppage time, they did have the opportunity to equalise when the game was still at 2-1.
The Magpies pressed high as Fulham looked to play out from the back.
Fabian Schar robbed Emile Smith Rowe on the edge of his own box, and had Newcastle’s best opportunity to make it 2-2. All he needed to do was compose himself.

However, the 32-year-old rushed his chance and smashed it wide. Alexander Isak looked on in disbelief, wondering why on earth Schar did not square it to him for an easier shot.
Schar could have taken his time and scored, or given the chance to Isak. Instead, he did neither, and squandered Newcastle’s best opportunity to draw level.
After Schar’s magical moment against Wolves, he blew it versus Fulham. It was a decisive moment, as Newcastle went on to concede again and lose 3-1.
Newcastle fans given their verdict on Schar miss
Following Newcastle’ 3-1 defeat to Fulham, Toon fans have taken to X to reflect on Schar’s decisive miss.
This Newcastle fan tried to keep it positive, and reflected on the fine margins of the defeat in West London, writing: “If Schar had squared to Isak and it became 2-2, we’d have probably ended up winning that match and being top of the league right now. Was a poor performance overall, but it just shows how small the margins are…”
A second Newcastle fan posted on X: ” We probably win today if Schar puts away an open net and we’d have been top.”
“If Schar squares that pass to Isak, it would have been a completely different outcome. The mind boggles when I see strikers in tap in locations and ignored by teammates,” wrote another member of the Toon Army.
A fourth Newcastle supporter commented: “Massive opportunity missed. Feel if Schar scores that chance, we go on to win that.”
This fan wrote: “The crazy thing is, if Schar squares that Isak we probably go on to win. Bruno, Pope, Schar all with horrific errors. Isak a ghost again and Gordon with a disgrace of a performance. Mad we were even in the game second half.”
Finally, this Newcastle fan posted: “Can’t stop thinking about Schar’s miss.”
Newcastle his self destruct at Craven Cottage
That Schar moment was absolutely pivotal, and it was an afternoon littered with Newcastle United mistakes.
Both of Fulham’s first half goals could have been avoided. The Magpies were cut apart at will in the opening 45 minutes, with the midfield giving the defence no protection.
And even the third goal was a disaster, as Bruno Guimaraes aimed to play an ambitious long pass across his own box. Sadly, the captain played it straight to Reiss Nelson, who guaranteed victory for Fulham as he made it 3-1.
Newcastle were the master’s of their own downfall at Craven Cottage, and Eddie Howe desperately needs to finds a way to improve performances. While the Magpies have 10 points from five games, the performances have been really worrying.
Anthony Gordon was really poor against Fulham, while not many of his teammates covered themselves in glory either.
