Newcastle fans deliver their verdict after ‘luck’ changes in Carabao Cup draw

Newcastle United are into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Owners PIF are understood to view this season as a great chance to go on another deep cup run and Eddie Howe’s side certainly helped tee one up on Wednesday night.

Indeed, Newcastle beat Chelsea 2-0 at St James’ Park thanks to a goal from Alexander Isak and an own goal from Axel Disasi.

The most pleasing aspect of it all was the performance, however, and particularly in the first-half. Howe’s side were relentless and forced the opening goal through an intense press, offering a glimpse of their very best again.

Not long after the victory over the Blues, Howe’s side discovered their fate in the Carabao Cup final eight.

Newcastle will play Brentford at home on the week commencing Monday 16 December, 2024.

While certainly not an easy draw, it is perhaps more favourable an assignment for Howe’s side, especially given the frankly ludicrous teams they were pitted against in last season’s competitions.

Taking to social media platform X, supporters relayed a similar message.

Naturally, supporters were pleased with the draw, though they of course did not play down the threat the Bees no doubt pose.

However, with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal also in the hat, it’s perhaps as good a draw as it could have been, especially at home.

“There’s a genuine chance here, hope we don’t mess it up,” wrote one fan.

“About time we had some luck in the draw,” added another.

“Get in at least it’s a home draw,” celebrated one supporter.

Another exclaimed: “Winnable game considering who was in the pot. And at home. Take it. Come on!”

One particularly confident onlooker said: “Announce semi-final.”

Another said: “Home draw is enough for me, whoever against.” While a fellow supporter said: “Yes please and thank you.”

All eyes will be on Bryan Mbeumo as Brentford head to Newcastle

Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo is reportedly Newcastle’s dream transfer target, which makes the tie all the more interesting.

While a January deal will undoubtedly be difficult to pull off, the very fact the forward could in theory join Newcastle a couple of weeks or so after is difficult to ignore.

Hailed as so good it’s “not normal” by Bees boss Thomas Frank, Newcastle have it all to do to keep him quiet.
