Joelinton shares what Eddie Howe told him before his goal against Leicester

Joelinton has stated that Eddie Howe told him to ‘stay wide’ before he scored Newcastle United’s second goal against Leicester City.

The Brazilian put the result beyond doubt in the 72nd minute with a wonderful finish, booking his side’s place in the final four of the Carabao Cup. The Magpies will now face one of Manchester United, Manchester City, Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Wolves in the semi final.

It was a special night inside St James’ Park, with fantastic performances all over the pitch in black and white.

Bruno Guimaraes won the player of the match award, while Dan Burn hogged the headlines with his first goal for his boyhood club. Combine that with his new chant and interesting dance move, and it was a wild night for the defender.

But, for me and many others, Joelinton was the real star of the show. He absolutely dominated Leicester with his energy and pressing, and got the assist for Burn’s goal.

He also got on the scoresheet himself, and has explained how his manager played a big role in him finding the net for the fourth time this season.

Joelinton credits Howe and Almiron for his goal against Leicester

After the game, Joelinton spoke to NUFC TV about his goal against Leicester.

“Yeah, the gaffer asked me to stay wide,” Joelinton said.

“And it was nice play from Tripp, Callum and Migg. I tried to see the space there and tried to attack the space, Migg found me with a great ball and I just had to shoot on goal. Very happy to score and make sure we get the win.”

What a performance from Joelinton

Howe asked Joelinton to stay wide, and that is exactly why he was able to score his goal. The buildup was excellent too, with Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron combining.

The Paraguayan then played a perfect through ball, meaning all Joelinton had to do was beat the keeper. He showed an attacking instinct that we have rarely seen from him, and slotted it home like a seasoned striker.

Joelinton’s renaissance continues to grow and grow, and he is now excelling on the left wing. Howe has done a brilliant job with the 26-year-old, and deserves a huge amount of credit.

That minor detail of asking him to hug the touchline paid dividends, as Howe reacted to Leicester’s change in formation.

When Kelechi Iheanacho and Jamie Vardy came on, Brendan Rodgers shifted to a back three. That meant there was space out wide, and Joelinton exploited it.

It was a real team goal from the Magpies, with so many people having a part to play.
