Jamie Carragher now shares verdict on Newcastle potentially signing Marc Guehi for £70m

Newcastle United are trying to sign Marc Guehi this summer.

The England international has been the subject of a number of bids from Newcastle, all of which have been rejected by Crystal Palace to date.

Though there is said to be hope that a deal will still get over the line, Guehi remains a Palace player.

Indeed, the Eagles are reportedly looking for upwards of £65million, with some reports from The Standard suggesting they want as much as £70million.

That would represent a significant increase on Newcastle’s current transfer record, the £63million spent on Alexander Isak in 2022. It would also make Guehi one of the most expensive central defenders of all time.

Reflecting on the price point involved, Jamie Carragher shared his thoughts.

Speaking on Sky Sports at 7.30pm BST on 25/08/2024 following Sunday’s Premier League draw with Bournemouth, Carragher admitted he would not be going that high for Guehi if he were in Newcastle’s shoes.

While he stressed Guehi was a good player, the pundit suggested £70m was just too high.

“It’s just interesting what’s going to happen in the next few days with Guehi and Crystal Palace,” he said.

“I mean, Guehi, we are talking about £70 million. I think he is a really good player. I wouldn’t pay £70 million for him, though, so I think that’s probably a big decision the club have got to make, whether they look somewhere else and someone cheaper because that is top dollar, that.”

Missing out on a player Newcastle have made a succession of bids for this close to the end of the transfer window would be hugely embarrassing.

However, the club do at least appear to have something of a contingency plan in mind.

Sporting director Paul Mitchell is reportedly scouring the market for potential alternatives, should Newcastle not be able to reach Guehi’s valuation.

Whether or not they feel £70million is too much for the Palace star, quite why they’ve left it so late to remain in a state of a limbo is up for debate.

There’s now seemingly a very real chance Newcastle do not land a new defender this summer.
