Newcastle United’s deadline to agree a deal with Crystal Palace for Marc Guehi is drawing closer.

While the transfer window is open until August 30th, Newcastle United are aiming to strike an agreement very soon.

It has been reported that Newcastle want an agreement for Guehi before the weekend, and will pull out of the deal if nothing is in place before the second round of Premier League fixtures.

That makes it a race against time, and explains why the Magpies are looking at alternatives. Newcastle have been linked with Edmond Tapsoba and Axel Disasi, as they do their due diligence to ensure they land a centre-back even it the Guehi deal collapses.

But the 24-year-old remains Paul Mitchell’s top target, and Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has provided a very positive update on Newcastle’s pursuit of Guehi.

Positive update on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Marc Guehi

Downie appeared on the Fully Loaded Transfer Show on YouTube on Wednesday night, and received some information regarding Newcastle’s interest in Guehi whilst he was on the air.

“What I’ve been told just now is that further talks have taken place today,” he said.

“There hadn’t been anything over the weekend, so there had been nothing since Friday.

“Further talks have taken place today and, it’s a line I’ve been saying a lot, the two clubs are trying to find a way of getting this done.”

Downie added: “From reading that, what I’ve just been told and a conversation I had last night, I would be surprised if it doesn’t get done.”

Positive outcome for Newcastle would come as a surprise

Given the information he has received, Downie now thinks that Guehi will sign for Newcastle United this summer.

Fresh talks have taken place, and there now appears to be hope that a solution will be found to bring the England international to St James’ Park.

The Telegraph have also reported that a deal for Newcastle to bring Guehi in has moved closer, and there is hope of an agreement.

That is excellent news, as Guehi wants to sign for Newcastle. As for Crystal Palace, it makes complete sense to sell from a financial perspective. There is no way they would get anything north of £60million for him next year, as he would be entering the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park.

This summer is the optimum time for Palace to sell Guehi, even if there were fears the deal would be off when it emerged that his teammate Joachim Andersen was leaving the Eagles to return to Fulham.

However, the Andersen deal has no impact on Guehi, and there is now a possibility that Crystal Palace could lose their two top centre-backs.

That is a shame for them, but it is great news for Newcastle, who are even more desperate for a centre-back to arrive after Fabian Schar got sent off against Southampton on Saturday.

He will serve a three-match ban, despite Mike Dean admitting that Schar’s red card was soft.
