Bruno Guimaraes was Newcastle United’s hero against Nottingham Forest, but he was not the only Toon player to produce something special on Saturday night.
All three of the Magpies’ goals were excellent, especially Fabian Schar‘s strike that made it 2-1 just before half time.
Newcastle’s first goal came from a set piece, and so did the second. Kieran Trippier’s free-kick from deep was headed down by the dominant Sven Botman, who managed to direct the ball into the path of his centre-back partner.
From there, Schar did the rest. He smashed a wonderful half-volley beyond the helpless Matz Sels, who could do nothing to deny the £3million defender.
It was a finish befitting of a striker, and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp believes people would be raving about that goal if Callum Wilson had scored it.
Jamie Redknapp loved Fabian Schar’s goal vs Nottingham Forest
Jamie Redknapp was seriously impressed with Schar’s goal during Sky Sports Premier League‘s post-match analysis.
“As that ball falls to him [Schar], it is a wonderful finish,” he said.
“If that had been Callum Wilson, we’d have been saying…
“He’s already got his eyes on the prize. He’s thinking if this falls to me I’m going to make sure I can get a good finish, a clean connection, and that’s exactly what he does.
“It falls to him and bang. Great goal. A really lovely finish. He has got good technique.”

Schar now has four Newcastle goals this season
It is such a clever finish from Schar, who is enjoying quite the prolific spell. He now has three goals in as many games, having bagged a brace in the 3-1 win over Aston Villa on January 31st.
The 32-year-old now has four goals this season, with his other being that long-range screamer against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
This was another moment of magic from Schar, who once again showcased his wonderful technique. He is a brilliant striker of a ball, and is now one goal away from this being his most prolific season as a Newcastle United player.
It was a great goal by Schar, and one that any player would be proud of. As Redknapp says, we would have been lauding Callum Wilson if he had done the same – although Newcastle’s number nine didn’t actually even get close to finding the net against Nottingham Forest.
Fortunately Schar did, as he continues his rich vein of form in front of goal.
