A lot of people thought Newcastle United could beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, but not many expected to batter them.

But that is exactly what happened, as Eddie Howe’s side smashed PSG 4-1 on a famous night for the club.

St James’ Park watched on in awe as the Magpies bettered the Ligue 1 side in every department. It felt like an outer body experience being inside that ground.

The players on the pitch delivered, with the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Kieran Trippier keeping Kylian Mbappe quiet. Just saying that about Lascelles is unbelievable.

Local lads Sean Longstaff and Dan Burn excelled, but the real marquee performance in black and white came from Bruno Guimaraes.

Before the game, we said it was a chance for Bruno to show PSG exactly what they were missing. He had the chance to hog the headlines after the game instead of Mbappe.

While it is actually Newcastle’s lesser players who everyone is talking about, so much praise has to go to Bruno. He was spectacularly good against PSG, and has been recognised for his performance by French outlet L’Equipe.

L’Equipe believe Bruno Guimaraes was Newcastle’s best player vs PSG

After the game, L’Equipe provided their player ratings. They are notoriously tough to impress, and actually gave Mbappe a 2/10 for his performance against Newcastle.

For them, Bruno was the best player on the pitch, giving the Brazilian a score of 8/10.

On Bruno, they wrote: “Obviously, Bruno Guimaraes (8) had scores to settle with PSG. The former Lyon midfielder let his rage explode as soon as he won a duel and he won quite a few last night. His activity rubbed off on his two midfield partners and in particular on Longstaff (7) not only a scorer but also impressive in his way of cutting off Parisian actions.”

Bruno was incredible during Champions League win

There were so many roars of emotion by Bruno. They are becoming a bit of a trademark of his, as he celebrates winning a tackle like he has scored a goal.

The Toon fans lap it up every time, responding with a roar of their own as their Brazilian maestro struts his stuff.

The 25-year-old was exceptional against PSG, on the stage that he wanted to represent Newcastle on. He showed why he belongs in the Champions League, standing out amongst an elite crop of players.

He showed PSG why they should have signed him, and he showed Toon fans why he is the most important player to arrive at St James’ Park since the takeover.

What a performance!
