Newcastle United beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday night, and they did it without some of their key players.
The Magpies were without Sven Botman, Joelinton and Callum Wilson for the Champions League clash at St James’ Park, but it did not matter.
Eddie Howe‘s side showcased their strength in depth against PSG, and that was epitomised by Jamaal Lascelles.
The 29-year-old has been on the fringes since Howe became manager. While he has been hailed for his impact off the pitch, he has struggled for minutes on it.
But the Newcastle captain got the chance to lead the team out against PSG, and produced a performance that proved he really can still do the business in a black and white shirt.

The Magpies have won three games in the space of a week, and they have all came with Lascelles at centre-back. He has been outstanding, much to the delight of his manager.
Eddie Howe ‘delighted’ after Jamaal Lascelles shines against PSG
After the game, Howe spoke to NUFC TV. He discussed how happy he was for players like Lascelles after the win over PSG.
“Delighted for the players that have come in and had to be very patient for their chance,” he said.
“People like Jamaal Lascelles who I thought was magnificent tonight. So professional last year, so team orientated.
“But it’s great to see him get some individual success.”

What a night for the Newcastle captain
Going into the game, being without Botman was the one big fear. Lascelles was taking his place, and while he excelled in the previous two games, this was PSG. This was Kylian Mbappe and co.
But Lascelles was unfazed. He was commanding all game, bullying the PSG players if they ever dared to try and spoil Newcastle’s special evening. He was like a bouncer screaming ‘not tonight lads’.
The defender was exceptionally good, and it was great to witness. Lascelles has done so much for this club, and led us during some difficult periods.
And while Newcastle have been on the rise, he has been on the bench. He became largely forgotten about, but that is no longer the case.
Lascelles has seized his opportunity, and it helped Newcastle beat Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 in the Champions League.
