Newcastle United’s unbeaten run has come to a rather predictable end.
Indeed, Newcastle were beaten by Fulham on Saturday and duly missed the chance to move top of the Premier League table.
In truth, little about their performances this season would suggest they would have been worthy table toppers anyway, even at an early stage of the campaign.
While the character Eddie Howe’s team have shown to grind out results when not playing particularly well has been impressive, few would doubt it has been a difficult start to the season.
The display at Craven Cottage was so bad it was slammed as “awful” by Alan Shearer, while Harvey Barnes even admitted Howe’s side were simply not aggressive enough off the ball.
Amazingly, Newcastle were still in the game towards the closing stages and may have even made it 2-2 if Fabian Schar had not squandered a more-than-presentable chance afforded to him by Bernd Leno.
Still, it just wasn’t to be and a mistake from Bruno Guimaraes allowed Reiss Nelson to bag a late third for the Cottagers, which sealed the defeat.

Bruno Guimaraes apologises again to Newcastle fans
Guimaraes was seen at full-time going over to the travelling support and apologising for his mistake.
Taking to social media platform X after the game, the Brazilian again held his hands up.
Bruno Guimaraes has not been at his best this season
It’s nice to see Guimaraes hold his hands up and accept the mistake and it’s important not to get on his back too much.
Still, there’s little doubt the Brazilian has not been at his best yet this season. He admitted as much after the win over Southampton, while the lacklustre displays continued while away on international duty with Brazil.
Newcastle need him back up to speed as soon as possible.
