Newcastle United endured a rather miserable defeat at Fulham on Saturday.
Eddie Howe’s side missed the chance to go top of the Premier League by falling to a 3-1 loss at Craven Cottage in a performance so bad it was slammed as “awful” by club legend Alan Shearer.
Harvey Barnes even admitted it was clear that Newcastle were just not aggressive enough off the ball, which feels like a fairly damning thing to say.
Despite being second best for much of the game, Howe’s side were still in with a chance of a result towards the closing stages. Fabian Schar really should have made it 2-2 when gifted an opportunity by Bernd Leno, after all.
Still, a late goal from Reiss Nelson – which in itself was a total gift from Bruno Guimaraes – sealed the three points for the hosts.
Guimaraes played a risky ball across his 18-yard box straight to the forward, who duly finished with aplomb.

According to The Chronicle, the Newcastle skipper went over to the away end to apologise for the mistake, pointing to his chest as if to take responsibility.
Handed the captaincy this summer, it’s pleasing to see the Brazilian take ownership of mistakes.

Clearly, playing a risky ball at a time where Newcastle could still feasibly get back into the game is not a wise decision. Guimaraes, usually so reliable, of all people will know he should be doing far better there.
Still, mistakes happen. It is of course disappointed it happened during what was already a bad performance from Newcastle but, as Joelinton recently put it, Guimaraes loves the Newcastle fans and the feeling is very much mutual.
