No matter what happens with Alexander Isak, Newcastle United want to sign Yoane Wissa.

Newcastle United must sign a striker this summer, and that need has only intensified following news coming out of St James’ Park on Thursday.

Alexander Isak is open to leaving Newcastle, with Liverpool and Al-Hilal interested in the 25-year-old. Newcastle have looked at Isak replacements, as he sits out the pre-season trip to Asia with a thigh injury.

Yoane Wissa is not on that list of replacements, as the Magpies have been targeting him as a player to operate alongside Isak.

Newcastle United step up efforts to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford

It was recently reported that Newcastle are leading the race to sign Wissa, and now a further update has emerged.

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has shed more light on the Magpies’ pursuit of the 28-year-old, stating on X that a ‘conclusion’ to negotiations is suddenly close.

Downie wrote on X: “Further talks are happening today at Brentford over the future of Yoane Wissa. Newcastle have had a £25m bid turned down but are in discussions over a £35m package. The player wants to leave and is currently training on his own in London. I’m told his move to #NUFC is moving towards a conclusion. Newcastle want him to be an option to Alexander Isak for the coming season.”

It had been reported that Wissa was unsettled by rumours regarding his future, which suggested that there could be a swift resolution.

That resolution currently looks like it will be Wissa moving to the North East and becoming a member of the Newcastle United squad.

Newcastle United’s need for Yoane Wissa has intensified even without Alexander Isak’s desire to leave

Even if it had not emerged that Isak was interested in leaving Newcastle United, the need to sign a striker only became more desperate on Thursday.

It was announced that the Sweden international was not travelling to Asia due to a thigh problem. That is the official line coming out of the club. Regardless of the severity of that injury, it highlighted how imperative it is that reinforcements arrive.

Will Osula and Sean Neave are the only strikers who have travelled to Asia. Isak is absent, while Callum Wilson has left.

It showcases how reliant Newcastle are on Isak, and why it is vital that a player like Wissa comes in. Newcastle are working towards making that a reality, while another forward will be pursued if Isak departs.
