Newcastle United and Kalvin Phillips no longer appear to be on a collision course.

The 28-year-old was at St James’ Park this weekend, but not to sort out his future. Instead, he was an unused substitute in Manchester City’s 3-2 win over Newcastle United.

A tired second half performance from Eddie Howe’s side reinforced the need for arrivals during the January transfer window, but Monday brought about a negative update from the Telegraph.

It had previously been claimed that Newcastle were confident about completing a deal for Kalvin Phillips, but that confidence has now disappeared.

The Telegraph have reported that the current deal on offer does not make financial sense for the Magpies, with Man City looking for a loan fee of around £7million and an obligation to buy in the summer.

With Man City seemingly unwilling to budge, the Magpies have cooled their interest for now. And that remains their stance following news that Joelinton could be out for the rest of the season due to injury.

But with Phillips desperately in need of a move away so that he can play regularly ahead of Euro 2024, just where is he going to go? The Shields Gazette and Newcastle World’s Liam Kennedy believes he has the answer.

Following The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards’ update on Newcastle’s interest in Phillips and news about Joelinton’s injury, journalist Liam Kennedy weighed in with an update of his own on X.

He wrote: “They’re going to have to find room from somewhere this month, if this [Joelinton needing surgery] is anything close to true. And, as per Luke Edwards, Phillips deal stalls (ish). I’m told #CPFC, as things stand, a more likely destination this window.”

A move to Crystal Palace would make sense for Phillips. He would be a guaranteed starter at Selhurst Park, while they might be more willing to commit long-term and agree to buy him in the summer – providing they have the financial resources.

For Newcastle, it is such a difficult situation. They need someone like Phillips until the end of the season, but not beyond.

And the financial hit they would have to take hints that it just is not worth it. The England international’s arrival would only hinder our spending further down the line.

But with Joelinton potentially out for the rest of the season, Newcastle are even more in need of midfield reinforcements.

Someone surely has to arrive, but it suddenly does not look like it will be Phillips. Instead, Crystal Palace is his more likely destination.
