When Sean Longstaff is likely to leave Newcastle United after interest from Everton

The January transfer window is open, and Sean Longstaff’s Newcastle United future is very much up in the air.

The Newcastle United academy graduate has become a fringe player in recent weeks, with Eddie Howe finding a settled midfield that does not include Sean Longstaff.

Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton are playing incredibly well together, which has resulted in Longstaff dropping to the bench.

The Magpies are on an eight-game winning run, with Longstaff only starting one of those games. That was Newcastle’s win against Bromley in the FA Cup.

The 27-year-old’s influence has waned, at a time when there is talk of him leaving St James’ Park.

Update on Sean Longstaff leaving Newcastle United

It has been claimed that Longstaff sees his future away from Newcastle United, as Toon officials ponder selling a player who would go down as pure profit in terms of PSR.

Everton are interested in Longstaff, but it would appear that a January departure is not quite on the horizon.

That is according to the Telegraph, who report that Longstaff is more likely to leave Newcastle United in the summer rather than January.

They report that there has been some interest in the midfielder this month, but not to the extent that a move away is close.

Sean Longstaff could be overtaken at Newcastle

Eddie Howe obviously needs squad depth, and would be reluctant to let Longstaff go this month.

However, it could be argued that he may soon slip even further down the pecking order.

While Longstaff struggled to have an impact against Bromley, Lewis Miley was excellent. The 18-year-old won the player of the match award, on what was his first senior start since February 2024.

Miley’s performance should lead to him getting more minutes as the season progresses, and that could be to the detriment of Longstaff.

Newcastle fans want to see more of Miley, and it could be bad news for Longstaff if Eddie Howe feels the same.

That could lead to him being sold, even if it is not until the summer.
