Newcastle United simply have to get better at selling players.

For all of their on-pitch success in recent weeks, the fact remains that Newcastle are expected to have a relatively quiet January transfer window on the incomings front.

Whatever frustration there is in regards to the make-up of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), they must be adhered to.

Indeed, Newcastle did not want to sell either of Elliot Anderson or Yankuba Minteh in June but were forced to, as Eddie Howe has confirmed.

Had they not raised that money, the club were reportedly facing a potential ten-point deduction for breaching the PSR rules.

Owners PIF were understood to have been unhappy about the desperate manner in which everything played out, so there needs to be an emphasis on selling players going forward.

With that in mind, difficult decisions must be made, which brings us to a certain Sean Longstaff.

Hailed as an “unsung hero” for playing through the pain barrier last season, the midfielder has been linked away.

Longstaff has lost his place of late. Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton are starring in midfield and, right now, it seems only an injury would force any of them out of the starting eleven on a regular basis.

According to The Chronicle, Premier League rivals Everton are keen on a move for the academy graduate this month.

Newcastle United already have their replacement for Sean Longstaff

Longstaff’s contribution during the Howe era cannot be overlooked. A crucial figure during the Champions League season of 2022-23, he scored memorable goals in big games against the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Southampton.

In an ideal world, keeping him as a back-up option would be wise.

Still, his status as an academy graduate makes him a tempting player to sell. Any money Newcastle receive for him would go down as ‘pure profit’ on the club’s balance sheet. For his part, Longstaff is reportedly starting to see a future away from Newcastle.

Howe is also keen to bring Lewis Miley back into the fold on a more regular basis. The teenager shone during his breakout campaign last year but has since struggled with injury.

Now fit again, perhaps he can be the player to replace Longstaff.
