Newcastle United have cooled their interest in Kalvin Phillips, and it sounds like another Premier League club are not interested at all.

It has been claimed this week that the Magpies have put their interest in Phillips on hold, with the midfielder currently proving to be too expensive.

The 28-year-old has also been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, with Ange Postecoglou’s side keen to bring the England international to North London after signing Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner.

But talk of Tottenham being interested in Phillips may actually be wide of the mark.

That is according to journalist Alasdair Gold, who has spoke on his YouTube channel about what he has heard from people with Tottenham about a potential move for Phillips.

“Kalvin Phillips, from what I understand that’s not a move Spurs are looking to make at this moment in time,“ he said.

“Phillips is very much a number six as well which is why I don’t understand the links to him. They have so many players who can play the number six role. If I’m Phillips why would I want to leave the bench at Man City for the bench at Spurs? That’s of no benefit to him.

“Yeah, from what I understand, speaking to a fair few people within Spurs, that’s not a player they’re looking at.“

Tottenham don’t need Phillips, but Newcastle do

As Gold says on his YouTube channel, Tottenham don’t need Phillips. They have got plenty of midfield options.

But that is not the case at Newcastle United, where Eddie Howe boasts just three at this moment in time. That is because Joelinton has suffered an injury, and could be out for the rest of the season.

On top of that, Bruno Guimaraes is one booking away from a two-game suspension, while Lewis Miley is still only 17.

Newcastle need a midfielder to arrive before the January transfer window closes, whether it is Phillips or someone else.

The Manchester City man is the player who has been most heavily linked, while it is clear that he desperately needs to secure a move away from the Etihad Stadium this month.

Now Tottenham are out of the race (or perhaps never in it at all), that is one less club for Newcastle to worry about, and one less club Man City can use to try and get the most money possible out of this deal.

The Magpies may have cooled their interest for now, but we certainly have not heard the last of this one.
