Newcastle United suddenly face fresh competition in the race to sign Kalvin Phillips this month.

For a long time it has looked like Kalvin Phillips to Newcastle United has been inevitable. It has been reported that the 28-year-old is keen to leave Manchester City and sign for the Magpies on loan, while our move was boosted further when Juventus ended their interest in the midfielder.

Phillips is interested in working with Eddie Howe, which is no surprise given the amount of players he has improved since taking over at St James’ Park. However, some people might have to leave before Newcastle can bring Phillips in, with profit and sustainability rules proving to be an issue during the January transfer window.

A lot of clubs are struggling to do business, but one team that has been busy is Tottenham Hotspur. They have already made two signings, bringing in Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin.

Now they are looking for signing number three, and it is one that could impact Newcastle United.

Tottenham to challenge Newcastle for Kalvin Phillips

According to the Northern Echo, Tottenham are now interested in signing Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City this month.

The report states that a space has now opened up in their squad following Eric Dier’s exit, and that some people within Spurs are pushing for the club to turn to Phillips.

It would be a real blow if Phillips did move to Tottenham, as that would be the second major transfer they have beaten us to in the space of a year. First it was James Maddison during the summer, and now it could be Phillips.

Newcastle’s need to bring in the £42million midfielder has only intensified over the past few days, with Eddie Howe confirming that Joelinton is going to be out of action for the next six weeks. That leaves the Magpies with just three fully fit centre midfielders.

Phillips was actually at St James’ Park on Saturday, watching on as his current employers Man City snatched a late victory over Newcastle.

Whether or not he returns to Tyneside this month remains to be seen, but interest from Tottenham certainly complicates matters.
