What Newcastle United have privately said about Bryan Mbeumo as Man United at risk of missing out

Bryan Mbeumo to Newcastle United was never going to work from a financial perspective.

While Bryan Mbeumo remains perfect for this Newcastle United team, the money required to sign the 25-year-old is beyond them.

Geordie Boot Boys understand that Newcastle thought Mbeumo was too expensive, with the Magpies unwilling to meet Brentford’s £60million+ asking price.

Even if the Magpies were willing to spend that much, his wages would have been an issue. It has been reported that Mbeumo wants £250,000-a-week, as Manchester United aim to strike a deal for the Cameroon international.

Newcastle United’s reaction to Bryan Mbeumo’s wage demands

That kind of wage is not on offer at St James’ Park right now. Newcastle United’s highest earner is Bruno Guimaraes, who is believed to earn around £160,000-a-week. He could soon be replaced by Alexander Isak, with contract talks due to begin soon.

Mbeumo wanted that distinction to go to him, which is something that Newcastle United could not offer.

According to the Telegraph, Mbeumo said he would only join Newcastle if they made him their highest-paid player. The report adds that Newcastle privately described his wage demands as ‘enormous’ and ‘impossible to match’.

Newcastle United will not match them, as they look elsewhere for reinforcements on the right of attack. Anthony Elanga is a target for Newcastle, although Nottingham Forest are not looking to sell the 23-year-old.

Manchester United at risk of missing out on Bryan Mbeumo

While Newcastle United are not going to sign Mbeumo, it remains to be seen if Manchester United will complete a deal.

The Red Devils remain the favourites for Mbeumo, but TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey has told Geordie Boot Boys that Tottenham Hotspur could enter the race following the appointment of Thomas Frank.

“Mbeumo is an option for Tottenham, it is emerging,” he said.

“It does appear that he might be open to stay in London.

“As it stands, Man United are still favourites, but there is something about Spurs here. They are looking at the situation and could hijack the Man United interest, which is something Newcastle were not willing to do.”
