The Marc Guehi to Newcastle United transfer saga is going to continue in 2025.
Marc Guehi was Newcastle United’s number one transfer target during the summer, but the Magpies were unable to strike a deal with Crystal Palace.
Paul Mitchell failed to sign Guehi, with Steve Parish stringing the Newcastle United sporting director along. The Magpies were made to look rather foolish, and the transfer window closed without a new centre-back arriving at St James’ Park.
Eddie Howe only wanted to sign Marc Guehi, with the Toon boss unsure if some of the alternatives would actually improve his side.
What Newcastle United plan to do in January

Since the summer, there have been links with other alternatives to Guehi. Newcastle have scouted Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens, while the Magpies have also looked at Loic Bade of Sevilla.
While there are other options out there, it looks like Newcastle’s top defensive target in January will still be Guehi.
That is according to the Northern Echo, who report that Newcastle are going to make a fresh move for Guehi during the January transfer window.
The Northern Echo state that Guehi’s stance over joining the Magpies is not believed to have changed, with the England international keen to move to Tyneside during the summer.
Newcastle United’s Marc Guehi stance
But while Guehi’s willingness to sign for Newcastle has not changed, his valuation has.
The Northern Echo add that Newcastle believe that Guehi’s value has decreased since the summer, as he prepares to enter the final 18 months of his contract at Selhurst Park.
During the summer, Palace wanted £75million for Guehi, but there is simply no way they will be able to command that kind of fee in January.
And with the 24-year-old’s contract due to expire in 2026, time is running out for Crystal Palace to get a decent price for their captain. A move away from the Eagles appears to beckon next year, assuming that Guehi opts against extending his deal in South London.
Newcastle still desperately need Marc Guehi
Opportunity could knock in January, as Mitchell prepares to make a fresh move for the player he failed to sign in the summer. It would be a chance at redemption for Newcastle’s sporting director, who will be well aware that the Magpies still need defensive reinforcements.
That need has been highlighted recently, with Emil Krafth suffering an injury. He is out of action with a broken collar bone, with Krafth set to miss Newcastle’s next six games.
The Sweden international has been serving as Fabian Schar’s understudy this season, with Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman still out of action through injury.
They are due to return in the near future, but that should not negate the need for Newcastle to sign another centre-back. The Magpies must look towards the future, and will hope that future includes Marc Guehi playing in black and white at St James’ Park.
