Bruno Guimaraes’ Newcastle United future has been under speculation, even after signing a new contract.

The Brazilian signed a new deal in 2023 but fans were concerned that included in the contract was a £100million release clause. Fans believed that a big club was going to sign him for the fee.

That clause has since expired and Guimaraes was made club captain for the 2024/25 season.

Guimaraes has formed a seemingly unbeatable partnership with Sandro Tonali in recent weeks while Joelinton also performs well on the left side of midfield – a goal in Newcastle’s win against Manchester United the highlight.

There has been speculation over the Toon captain’s future in recent weeks with reports suggesting Manchester City are keen on signing Guimaraes in January.

However, a recent report now suggested something Newcastle fans are sure to celebrate.

Manchester City won’t pursue Bruno Guimaraes

The Cityzens have struggled for form in recent months after key player Rodri was sidelined until the end of the season with an ACL injury – the same problem which has caused Newcastle defenders Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles to miss nine months of action.

Their form has dipped and as a result, have fallen behind Newcastle in the Premier League table.

City boss Pep Guardiola confirmed that they will look for a holding midfielder in January but didn’t name Guimaraes during his comments.

Now, Sky Sports have reported that City won’t be pursuing a deal for Guimaraes. The report also suggests that the Brazilian would immediately lose his spot on the side upon the return of Rodri.

Guimaraes has made 19 appearances in the Premier League this season, scoring once and bagging four assists.

A former Newcastle star will join Man City

While Guimaraes won’t be joining the defending Champions in January, there is one former Newcastle player who will be making the move to North West England at the end of the season.

Guardiola is soon to begin working with former Newcastle player Hugo Viana, the 41-year-old signed for Newcastle for £8.5m in 2002 as a teenager but failed to set the world alight despite being considered a hot prospect.

Newcastle were linked to Viana while searching for a successor to Dan Ashworth before ultimately choosing to appoint Paul Mitchell.

The former Portuguese international made 39 appearances for the Magpies between 2002 and 2006 before signing for La Liga side Valencia.

Viana is taking over from Txiki Begiristain who spent over 12 years with the club helping them win a plethora of trophies.
