Troy Deeney hints that Newcastle’s ‘dream’ January signing needs a transfer very soon

Newcastle United felt the wrath of January transfer target Bryan Mbeumo on Saturday.

The 25-year-old was instrumental in the win for Thomas Frank’s side, as Brentford beat Newcastle United 4-2.

While Newcastle’s defending was laughable, the Bees certainly deserve a lot of credit for their performance. They inflicted a miserable defeat on the Magpies, with Bryan Mbeumo getting the ball rolling with his goal in the eighth minute.

He also provided the assist for Kevin Schade, as Mbeumo took his tally for the season to nine goals and two assists.

It is easy to understand why Mbeumo is Newcastle’s ‘dream’ signing ahead of January, as Eddie Howe aims to bring in a winger.

The Cameroon international looks like the answer to all of the Magpies’ problems, even if Newcastle know Mbeumo will be expensive.

Troy Deeney asks Bryan Mbeumo question after scoring vs Newcastle

He justified what will be a lofty price tag on Saturday, and his performance against Newcastle earned Mbeumo a place in Troy Deeney’s Premier League team of the week for BBC Sport.

Deeney has praised Mbeumo’s efforts, whilst also hinting that a move away from the Gtech Community Stadium could be on the horizon.

“Every time I think he is going to slow down he just shows that quality and self belief – this time with a goal and assist against Newcastle,” he said.

“I am really interested to see what happens with him in the near future. If he stays at Brentford he will get marked out of the game but if he moves on, how good could this guy be?”

Mbeumo might actually be beyond Newcastle United

While Newcastle’s efforts to stop Mbeumo on Saturday were far from impressive, his goal was outstanding. Nick Pope was completely helpless.

Mbeumo continues his fantastic season, and is now one goal away from hitting double figures in the Premier League for the first time in his career.

He continues to get better and better, but Deeney is suggesting that there is a ceiling for him at Brentford. For Mbeumo to go to the next level, he needs to move on.

The winger certainly has the ability to play for a club higher up the division. You could even argue that he is a Champions League calibre player.

That is why he might actually be beyond Newcastle United. Given the Magpies’ current trajectory, Mbeumo may feel that he can play for someone even better. When you look at the Premier League table, why would he leave Brentford to join a club that is below them?

While Mbeumo is perfect for this Newcastle team, a Toon transfer feels impossible.
