Newcastle United’s Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur are looking to do a deal for a player who Eddie Howe has been very keen to work with at St James’ Park.

First they signed James Maddison earlier this summer, a player who Newcastle chased for a long time before missing out. Now another England international who has been on the Magpies’ radar could be on their way to Tottenham.

That is because Ange Postecoglu’s side are looking to do a late deal for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

Tottenham launch bid for Conor Gallagher

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham have launched a deadline day bid worth £40million for Gallagher.

However, the report adds that the offer is £5million below Chelsea’s asking price. They are looking to receive £45million for the 23-year-old.

The Daily Mail add that Gallagher is considering his future at Stamford Bridge following the signing of Cole Palmer, who has arrived from Manchester City.

That could lead to academy graduate Gallagher calling time on his Chelsea career, and Tottenham are keen to let him continue playing Premier League football in the capital.

Eddie Howe wanted Gallagher at Newcastle

However, earlier in the window it was Eddie Howe who was keen to bring Gallagher to the North East.

The midfielder is a long term target at St James’ Park. He has been constantly linked with a move to Tyneside in recent years – even when Steve Bruce was in charge he was a target.

Howe has also been keen to sign Gallagher for Newcastle, with the club looking at a potential loan deal earlier this summer. It was even claimed that the Toon boss was more interested in signing him over Dominik Szoboszlai, who ended up joining Liverpool.

Gallagher is reportedly a player who Howe really likes, and he is the type of player who would really suit being part of Newcastle’s midfield.

However, he could soon be part of Tottenham’s midfield instead.
