Tottenham are about to sign ‘impressive’ £26m player who was in talks with Newcastle last year

Tottenham Hotspur are now on the verge of signing a player who Newcastle United were understood to be in conversations with last month.

Romanian defender Radu Dragusin’s agent was in talks with both Newcastle and Arsenal ahead of a big move to the Premier League.

However, the 21-year-old now looks set to join Tottenham instead with Fabrizio Romano claiming that the deal is all done for a fee of around £26m.

Newcastle miss out on ‘impressive’ defender destined for Tottenham

Newcastle are believed to be in the market for a new right-sided centre-back who could possible replace Fabian Schar and be a long-term partner for Sven Botman at the back.

They had identified Dragusin as a possible candidate for that role having proven to be an ‘impressive‘ talent for Genoa in Serie A, making 19 appearances in the competition so far this season.

But that now doesn’t look like it’s going to happen with this deal given the iconic ‘here we go’ line from Romano who claims that Tottenham have also beaten Bayern Munich to the signing.

Newcastle may have admired the 21-year-old from afar and been interested in bringing him to Tyneside, but the likelihood is that they probably couldn’t have afforded the fee Tottenham have paid anyway.

Newcastle could be in for a long January

With rumours suggesting that Newcastle don’t have very much to spend at all, if anything, then supporters could be in for a long month after hoping the team would be able to add suitable reinforcements.

Eddie Howe simply has to add to his squad who have massively struggled with injuries this season, he can’t afford to go another six months with the same players who have suffered a huge slump in form recently.

There’s a concern that they must sell before being able to buy and Sean Longstaff is a name that has been suggested as a potential sale, but Howe would like to avoid that at all costs.

Newcastle won’t receive any commercial money from their Adidas deal until next year so it doesn’t look like their difficulties with the league’s profit and sustainability rules are going to improve any time soon.
