Jorgen Strand Larsen could be a Newcastle United player right now, but instead he remains locked to the bottom of the Premier League table.

While Newcastle United celebrate their win over Burnley and look ahead to facing Bayer Leverkusen and Sunderland, Jorgen Strand Larsen is facing up to the reality of another defeat with Wolves.

They were beaten 4-1 by Manchester United on Monday night, with Rob Edwards’ side rock bottom with just two points on the board. To put their plight into perspective, they are 13 points behind 17th placed Nottingham Forest.

It has been an embarrassing start to the season for Wolves, and things got worse for their number nine against Man United.

Who is the one player you wish Newcastle United signed in the summer?

We missed out on a lot, but I'm not upset we didn't sign Strand Larsen in the end!

Former Newcastle United target Jorgen Strand Larsen jeered by his own fans

Strand Larsen was named in the Wolves starting XI on Monday night, but was unable to help them pick up their first Premier League win of the season.

Instead, he was jeered by his own supporters.

Edwards decided to take the Norwegian striker off in the 69th minute, which resulted in sarcastic cheers from the Wolves faithful inside Molineux.

They were unimpressed with Strand Larsen, who has scored just one Premier League goal this season. For reference, that is the same number as Alexander Isak and one more than Yoane Wissa, who has just made his Newcastle United debut.

The 25-year-old was visibly angry following the jeers, with Edwards having to calm him down.

On Strand Larsen, Edwards told the Athletic after the defeat: ” I just said: ‘look, stay positive and don’t react now’.

“It will hurt him. He’s proud, he’s one of the lads that was really speaking before the game, in the huddle, in the changing room and he’s really passionate and spoke really well.

“He is trying. It wasn’t that long ago, against Aston Villa, when I thought he was brilliant, he really was.

“It was a difficult night tonight, so I just told him: ‘it’s difficult now I know that, but keep your head down.”

Why Jorgen Strand Larsen wanted to join Newcastle United

After seeing multiple strikers turn them down, Newcastle United turned to Strand Larsen in the summer.

They were prepared to pay big money for him, with the Magpies offering as much as £55million for the Norway international. Newcastle even agreed personal terms with Strand Larsen, but Wolves stood firm.

What a strike this is! Toon fans, what do you think about Newcastle’s newest target Kevin Danois?

Would he be a better signing than Kees Smit?

They turned down all of the Magpies’ offers, despite the forward making it clear to them that he wanted to move to St James’ Park.

It was reported that Strand Larsen saw this as his chance to move to a big club at the age of 25. It would have allowed him to play in the Champions League, leading the line for an Eddie Howe side that is very much on the up.

Ultimately, Strand Larsen was denied that opportunity. Instead, Newcastle United spent £69million on Nick Woltemade followed by £55million on Yoane Wissa.

As for Strand Larsen, his fears appear to be correct. Wolves are hurtling towards the Championship, while his performances this season are unlikely to lead to a big club swooping in and rescuing him.
