Newcastle United are expected to be busy when the transfer window opens back up in January.
There is plenty of work to be done by Newcastle United club chiefs in January after a severely disappointing summer transfer window.
The mood around St James’ Park was dampened by the lack of signings over the summer.
Newcastle first had to wriggle free of the Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules by selling exciting young duo Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson before the June 30th cut-off date.
After evading a potential points deduction, Newcastle then turned their attention to trying to strengthen Eddie Howe’s squad.
Michael Olise was a top target before his move to Bayern Munich, Newcastle then tried and failed to land Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, and sporting director Paul Mitchell also failed with a last-gasp £50m bid for Anthony Elanga.

Six Newcastle United players up for sale in January
After missing out on top targets over the summer, there is an expectancy for Newcastle to splash some cash in January.
Mitchell is set to be handed a £70m budget in January and a new right-winger is the top priority ahead of a new centre-back.
But Newcastle could also be busy trying to sell in January with a number of players now on the fringe of Howe’s squad.
According to The Athletic‘s Chris Waugh, as many as six Newcastle players could be put up for sale in January – many of which were also up for sale in the summer.
He wrote: “I doubt a formal ‘list’ exists, but there are players who are dispensable. Almiron, Wilson, Matt Targett, Martin Dubravka and Murphy could have left during the summer, had appropriate bids arrived.
“That remains the case, but there are reasons why none were sold. They are on good contracts at Newcastle, in many cases they are ageing, have underperformed or have had fitness issues, and there was a lack of interest.
“Sean Longstaff’s academy-graduate status meant he was also someone who Newcastle would have considered cashing in on before June 30.
“With less than a year left on his deal, Newcastle may have to seriously consider selling Longstaff in January, or risk losing him for a free next summer.”
So to summarise: Waugh expects Newcastle to be open to bids for Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson, Matt Targett, Martin Dubravka, Jacob Murphy and Sean Longstaff.
Newcastle need to freshen up their squad
Howe has led Newcastle to a brilliant start to the season, but obvious flaws in the squad are starting to emerge.
In the last two matches against AFC Wimbledon and Everton, Newcastle have lacked creativity and threat both in midfield and out wide.

The right side of the attack is a particular worry with Howe having to shuffle around Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes to try and accommodate for the squad’s weakness in that position.
A new right-sided winger – and a top-class one at that – must be the top target in January. Beyond that, Newcastle could still do with extra defensive depth and a creative midfielder to add a new dynamic in the centre of the pitch.
