Newcastle’s takeover has thrown up a rumour or 100 and the international break has only intensified the gossip.
A report from the German media claimed Niklas Sule of Bayern Munich is a potential target.
Where have these claims come from?
The claim has been made by Christian Falk, Head of Football at German tabloid Bild.
Until Newcastle appoint a new manager and director of football, it’s just speculation.
The Athletic have also reported that every major decision will have to go back to Saudi, which slows the process too.
What is Sule’s contract situation?
Sule is out of contract at the end of the season. That is the element of this link which makes it most plausible.
Of course, the information could just be coming from Sule’s camp to try and get Bayern to offer him a new, improved deal.
But Sule’s contract situation means his asking price in January shouldn’t be ridiculous. He would also be free to discuss a pre-contract with Newcastle at that stage.
Burnley’s James Tarkowski is in the exact same contract situation and he is another reported Toon target.
How good is Sule?
Sule is a Bayern Munich regular and German international. At 26, he is experienced but with his best years ahead of him.
He won the Champions League with Bayern in 2020, coming on for Jerome Boateng after 25 minutes of the final.
Sule is not the quickest, but at 6ft 5in, he is physically imposing and would enjoy the Premier League.
Where would he fit into Newcastle’s plans?
Last week, it was reported that the centre of defence was one of five positions Newcastle’s new owners want to improve.
Perhaps he would be a higher class alternative to Tarkowski or maybe Newcastle could try and get both given their contract situations.
Signing a player from the German champions would be a signal of intent, but of course there must be consideration over what signing someone from Bayern Munich would do in terms of the wage structure.
It is worth repeating; until Newcastle appoint a new manager and director of football, any transfer talk is likely just speculation, but this is an exciting link, where it is possible to see how it could happen eventually.
