Newcastle United almost had a Champions League night to remember away to Paris Saint-Germain last season.
A depleted Newcastle United squad almost did the impossible, with Alexander Isak giving the Magpies the lead in Paris. It looked like that goal would hand Eddie Howe a famous victory, only for a disgraceful penalty decision to rob him and his team.
On that night, Newcastle United had Lewis Miley in centre-midfield. The injury crisis had taken hold, with Howe having limited experience on the bench in terms of outfielders to change the game.
One of those players named as a substitute was Michael Ndiweni. The Geordie striker was part of the group in Paris, but did not make an appearance. However, he had made his senior debut just three days earlier in a 4-1 win over Chelsea at St James’ Park.
It was Ndiweni’s only involvement last season, before being released in the summer.

Michael Ndiweni joins second club after Newcastle United release
Following his Newcastle United departure, Ndiweni signed for Ashington in August.
However, his time with the Northern Premier League Division One East side came to an end this month.
Now the 21-year-old has dropped down another level, with Newcastle Blue Star confirming that they have signed Ndiweni on Tuesday.
They currently play in the Northern League Division One, which is the ninth tier of English football.
On the move, Ndiweni told Newcastle Blue Star’s website: “The opportunity came along to play regular football which is my priority at the moment.”
Hopefully Ndiweni gets consistent minutes and starts banging the goals in for Newcastle Blue Star, who are currently fifth in the Northern League Division One table.
What happened to Newcastle United’s other substitutes against PSG that night
Eddie Howe had six other players on his bench that night in the Parc des Princes, none of which were brought on.
Martin Dubravka is now Newcastle’s first choice goalkeeper again, having performed exceptionally well during Nick Pope’s absence.
The Magpies also had Loris Karius on the bench that night. He was released at the end of the season, and Karius was even contemplating retirement. However, Karius has now signed with Schalke on a deal until the end of the 2024/25 campaign.
Paul Dummett did not appear off the bench. He has just signed for Carlisle United, with Dummett enduring a disappointing debut that ended after five minutes due to injury.
Elsewhere, Lewis Hall has now gone on to establish himself as one of the Premier League’s best left-backs and an England international.
Finally, James Huntley and Ben Parkinson are still part of Newcastle United’s Under-21s squad. Parkinson was meant to be loaned out this month, but injury has put an end to those plans.
