If Newcastle United want to sign Ivan Toney in January, they are going to have to break their transfer record.
The 27-year-old has been linked with a return to St James’ Park, with iNews claiming that he is on Newcastle’s list of targets heading into 2024.
A move back to Tyneside would give Ivan Toney a second chance in a Newcastle shirt, having failed to impress when he played for the club as a youngster. He did not receive enough opportunities, and has since gone on to prove just how talented he is at Peterborough United and now Brentford. In the words of Thomas Frank, he is ‘special‘.
His form for Brentford has seen him recognised as one of the Premier League’s elite strikers, leading to speculation over a move away in the January transfer window. Newcastle have been linked, but Arsenal appear to be the favourites to secure his signature.
However, new updates from TalkSPORT and 90min suggest that a move away for Toney in the new year might not be straightforward.

New Brentford contract a possibility for £80m-rated Ivan Toney
All the talk surrounding Toney at the minute is about him signing a new contract.
TalkSPORT have claimed that Brentford are confident that Toney is going to sign a new deal, with his current one due to expire in the summer of 2025.
They add that the Bees are ‘adamant’ they will not sell the England international in January.
90min have also provided information on Toney’s future, stating that Brentford plan to offer him a new deal despite his desire to leave. 90min add that he would like any new contract to include a release clause.
They also state that Brentford currently value Toney at £80million – an asking price which they claim has ‘shocked’ Toney.
That kind of figure will likely stop Toney leaving Brentford in January. For example, there is no way Newcastle can pay that amount of money.
It would mean breaking the club’s transfer record, which simply is not going to happen midway through the season. And if Newcastle were even capable of breaking their transfer record, it would not be on a striker when they already have Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson.
