Newcastle United have reportedly opened discussions to bring striker Ivan Toney back to the club, in what could be a sensational big-money move.
Toney has been outstanding since leaving St James’ Park in 2018, shining at Peterborough before earning a move to Brentford in 2020.
He helped the Bees achieve promotion with a then-record-breaking individual campaign in the Championship, and has shone in the Premier League, scoring 20 goals last season.
With his contract expiring in 2025, it seems that he will be destined for a big move, and a number of Premier League top six sides have held an interest in the 27-year-old.
Football Transfers have now revealed that Newcastle are considering a move for him, and are one of a few clubs who have actively opened discussions with the striker over a transfer, potentially next summer, whilst Manchester United are considering a move in the winter window.
Toney is currently serving a lengthy ban from football after breaching gambling regulations and is training away from the Brentford squad, with his ban set to end in January.
Should Newcastle sign Toney?
Newcastle’s current striking options are strong, with big-money signing Alexander Isak impressing since his arrival last year and Callum Wilson continuing to deliver off the bench.
Wilson’s contract expires at the end of the season, but it now seems that Newcastle have opened up discussions over a new deal for the 31-year-old.

This could prove to be a crucial factor in any move for Toney. If Wilson stays at the club, there will be little need for Newcastle to try and sign a striker that Brentford manager Thomas Frank values at over £100m.
If Wilson departs, then Toney could be the ideal complementary option to support Isak, and both players could even lead the line together.
It remains to be seen whether Toney would be interested in returning to St James’ Park, but given that Newcastle have opened discussions over a move, they may have received encouragement from Toney’s entourage that he would be open to a return.
