Liverpool are holding out for a fee in the region of £13 million for Xherdan Shaqiri this summer, as per Sky Sports.
What does this have to do with Newcastle? The Magpies were linked with a swoop for the wideman in May 2020, by the Daily Mail.
That report said that the Swiss playmaker was an option if the takeover went through.
But at this price, some Newcastle fans on Twitter feel that the club should revisit their reported interest.
We wrote an article to that effect back in June. Shaqiri is a player who may feel he has a point to prove after slipping down the pecking order at Anfield.
His favourite position is as a number 10 (via Liverpool Echo), so he might be more of an alternative to Joe Willock if he doesn’t make the move from Arsenal.
That said, his versatility means he can operate on either flank and he has an eye for goal when cutting in from the right.
Steve Bruce looks set to go with a 3-5-2 to start the season, but a change of system to get wingers into the team shouldn’t be ruled out as the season goes on.
Shaqiri will turn 30 in October, which probably means Mike Ashley would be put off from a swoop.
But many supporters feel £13 million is a decent price for a player of Shaqiri’s ability and want the club to act.
Of course, there isn’t any genuine expectation that they will. That’s just one of the reasons why this summer has been frustrating.
That said, there were still a fair few Magpies wanting their club to take advantage of the asking price, as per the latest report:
