Newcastle United are signing Yoane Wissa on transfer deadline day, ensuring that Eddie Howe has all the striker cover he needs for the 2025/26 season.
With Alexander Isak joining Liverpool, it was vital that a striker arrived to take his place at St James’ Park. There were fears that would not be the case, but that changed on Monday morning.
Newcastle have agreed to sign Yoane Wissa, bringing an end to that transfer saga. Just like Isak, player power is proving to be the winner.
Wissa will join Nick Woltemade in the Newcastle United squad, with Eddie Howe getting a completely new forward line. There is excitement on Tyneside about both players, but pundit Paul Merson has questioned why Nicolas Jackson was not nearer the top of Newcastle’s list of targets.

Paul Merson questions Newcastle United’s Nicolas Jackson decision
Speaking on Sky Sports News on transfer deadline day, Merson has admitted he is shocked that Newcastle United did not make a move to sign Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea.
“How Newcastle have not gone after him I do not know,” he said.
“They’ve gone and got that lad from Germany, who we don’t know what’s going happen, he’s never played in the Premier League, I’ve never seen him play.
“Nicolas Jackson, he’s a handful. He made [Cole] Palmer as good as Palmer made him. I’m shocked that he’s not gone anywhere else.”
It was reported on deadline day that Newcastle were considering Jackson, but it is Wissa and Woltemade who will be leading the line at St James’ Park instead.
Nicolas Jackson set to leave Chelsea on transfer deadline day
Jackson was floated as an option for Newcastle, but will not be ending transfer deadline day as a Magpies player.
Instead, his move to Bayern Munich is back on after Chelsea initially pulled the plug over the weekend.
According to the Telegraph’s Matt Law on X, Bayern Munich will pay £14.2million to loan Jackson, plus a further £56.2million to make the deal permanent next summer.
With a total cost of more than £70million, it is easy to understand why Newcastle were unsure about bringing Jackson to St James’ Park.
While he is a decent player with a lot of potential, the fact Newcastle were not fully convinced about him explains why the right decision was made.
In contrast, Newcastle are very excited about Woltemade, while Wissa is a Premier League-proven talent.
