Gabri Veiga became the talk of the Toon on Wednesday night, but transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has pulled the brakes on the Spaniard signing for Newcastle United at this moment in time.

Newcastle have been linked with signing Veiga for months now, with claims stating that the Magpies are willing to activate his £34million release clause.

His performances in Spain have attracted a lot of attention, with Newcastle one of multiple to clubs interested in signing him. However, a story on Wednesday afternoon suggested that Eddie Howe’s side had made the first move.

Marca claim Newcastle are close to Gabri Veiga deal

Marca in Spain have reported that Newcastle are close to completing a deal for the 21-year-old. They reported that the club have made a bid for Veiga and are now the closest to signing the attacking midfielder.

The story from Marca states that Veiga could now soon become a Newcastle United player. However, that claim has been disputed by Fabrizio Romano.

Fabrizio Romano disputes rumour

While Marca believe Newcastle are close to signing Veiga, Romano disagrees.

He has taken to Twitter to state that no club has activated his release clause, which is the only way Celta Vigo will sell the talented youngster this summer.

Romano adds that while no club has had a bid accepted or agreed terms with Veiga, a move to the Premier League is most likely in the coming months.

With conflicting stories, this is something we are going to have to get used to this summer. There will be plenty of claims and counter claims – especially with targets from overseas.

While talk of signing Veiga was very exciting given his clear potential, it feels like Marca have jumped the gun – even if we would rather that story was true over Romano’s.

Newcastle are in the conversation and have shown an interest in the youngster, but nothing is close as it stands.
