Newcastle to battle Man United for £35m Gabri Veiga

Newcastle United scouts have been very busy lately and are now keeping watch over Celta Vigo’s young Spanish midfielder, Gabri Veiga but face competition from Manchester United.

The Carabao Cup finalists face each other again in the league this season, but are now The Sun believe they’re set to battle it out in the transfer market in the off-season as both clubs have sent their scouts to watch 20-year-old Veiga.

The Spanish Under 21 player has a contract that runs until 2026 at Celta Vigo, but his agent and Celta are discussing an improved deal as his current one has a release clause of £35million. The new deal would include an improved release clause which they are hoping will be double the current figure in a bid to deter other clubs from making their move.

Veiga is ‘intelligent and strong’

Veiga has made 23 appearances in LaLiga so far this season and racked up eight goals and three assist along the way. His manager, Carlos Carvalhal has recently heaped praise on Veiga calling saying “he knows how to play, he is intelligent and very strong.”

Talks are reportedly underway over the new deal which would include the higher release clause, but now that the interest from the Premier League has become public knowledge it could throw a spanner in the works as far as Celta are concerned. If Veiga has his head turned by a potential move to England, he may hold off signing that new deal.

Not short of options

As well as Newcastle and Man United, there’s also said to be interest from the Bundesliga so Veiga would not be short of options should he decide to hold off signing a new deal with the club that nurtured him through their academy.

It’s a big test of that whole “Is there any loyalty in football?” debate.

Newcastle’s interest is no real surprise as we are currently linked with every breakthrough player around Europe due to Dan Ashworth‘s plan to bring in and nurture young talent from the academy through to the first team. The club are currently recruiting even more scouts to increase their network to find these players and steal a march on the competition.
