According to Goal, Newcastle target Dominic Calvert-Lewin may leave Everton next summer.

The report states that the striker has recently switched agents, which has indicated to some that he is ‘gearing up’ for a move away from Goodison Park.

This is exciting news for Arsenal, who reportedly want to sign the England international. But it could also be good news for Newcastle United and PIF.

That’s because the Telegraph reported in October that the Magpies’ new owners want to bring Calvert-Lewin to St James’ Park.

It was a rumour that delighted Toon fans, who are still getting used to being linked with top class players. PIF and co have big ambitions for Newcastle.

Calvert-Lewin is reportedly highly regarded by Newcastle’s recruitment team, and it’s no surprise given his talents.

He’s had a tough season so far, with injury limiting his time on the pitch. The 24-year-old has scored three goals in three Premier League appearances.

But the Euro 2020 runner-up has developed into a top striker in recent years. Last season he netted a career best 16 Premier League goals.

Can Newcastle challenge Arsenal for Calvert-Lewin in 2022?

During the Mike Ashley era, Newcastle would have no chance of competing with Arsenal for a player.

But perhaps things will be different now that PIF call the shots.

And if Calvert-Lewin is available in the summer, the Magpies might actually have a shot at challenging Arsenal for Calvert-Lewin’s signature.

There are two factors that will dictate whether or not a move is possible. Firstly, Newcastle need to stay in the Premier League. But their survival bid got underway on Saturday when they beat Burnley.

Secondly, it may depend on where Arsenal finish this season. If they come fourth and qualify for next season’s Champions League then we’ve got no chance.

But if they miss out on the top four, Newcastle could be able to compete with the Gunners.

They will be able to offer a better financial package. The battle will be convincing him to come to a project club like Newcastle rather than one of the infamous ‘big six’.

A move for Calvert-Lewin would be wildly ambitious. But it’s the kind of ambition we need to get used to as Toon fans.

While we’re happy to see the manager turn up early or the St James’ Park windows get a scrub, PIF will want to bring in big players to match their ambitions.
