Newcastle United are reportedly competing with Arsenal to sign Mykhaylo Mudryk in January, whose rumoured asking price has now dropped.
The Ukrainian winger is a man in demand following his performances this season, and seems set for a move to the Premier League next month.
He has been linked with a move to Newcastle, as Eddie Howe continues to search for a winger. But he is also a target for Arsenal, who are one of just two teams who are above the Magpies in the Premier League right now.
Mikel Arteta’s side are challenging for the title, and could look to give their bid a boost with January reinforcements. That includes a move for Mudryk, a 21-year-old who has excelled in the Champions League this season and been described as ‘rapid‘.
Mudryk has the potential to be a real superstar, which is why Shakhtar want £86million for him. That fee would make him Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever – but it seems he could now be available for less than that.

Donetsk willing to sell Mudryk for less than his asking price
According to the Athletic, Mudryk will be sold for a fee lower than £86million.
They report that interested parties believe that Shakhtar Donetsk will accept a fee lower than their monstrous asking price.
£86million would make him one of the world’s most expensive ever signings – he would become the most expensive Ukrainian player ever.
When the asking price was revealed by Shakhtar, Mudryk was quick to make his feelings known. He felt like he was going to be priced out of a move, and it now appears that he will be sold for a smaller fee.
How much smaller remains to be seen, but it sounds like Newcastle are not winning the race to sign Mudryk.
Arsenal have the edge over Newcastle in bid to sign Mudryk
The Athletic add that ‘sources with knowledge of the matter’ believe that there is a good chance Mudryk will leave Shakhtar and join Arsenal during the January transfer window.
They add that Mudryk is their priority target, and it sounds like this is a transfer tussle that Newcastle are not going to win.
That is a real shame, as Mudryk fits the bill of what the Magpies want. He has the ability to make a difference now, and is of an age where he could be part of the long term future at St James’ Park alongside the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Sven Botman and Alexander Isak.
But Arsenal are a very desirable club right now, seemingly back on track after years of stagnation. And it could result in them winning the race to sign Mudryk.
